Obituary for Maureen Helen Dufour

Maureen Helen Dufour (nee Kelly) age 78, passed away on Monday, December 10, in Cincinnati, Ohio, her home since 1981.

Maureen was born in New York on January 28, 1940, the first of Edward and Jessie Cobane Kelly's six children. The Kelly family lived in Providence, RI from 1944 until 1957 when they moved to Scranton, PA. Maureen was a 1961 graduate of Marywood University and held a master's degree in education from the University of Rhode Island.

Maureen lived in Philadelphia after her college graduation and began a teaching career in secondary education. There she met Alfred Dufour. They married in 1964 and moved to Rhode Island where Al pursued his Ph.D. They loved RI and the Narragansett Bay Area. They raised their three sons, enjoyed sailing on their boat Sacajawea and made many friendships through Maureen's active spirit of volunteerism.

After Al's career brought them to Cincinnati, Maureen taught in special education programs and was active in community organizations. She remained active in her church, teaching religious education and participating in various activities in her parish.

She was a voracious reader, politically astute debater, and passionate advocate for the less fortunate. She loved to travel; she visited many countries, often with a humanitarian purpose, always with an open mind and heart.

She was a loyal friend to many. Her kindness made it impossible for her to find fault with others. Even when she was physically weak, she was capable of dangerously tight hugs. The messages in those squeezes remain clear to all of us who were lucky recipients. She loved you.

She is survived by her husband Al and her two sons Matthew and Jonathan, all of Cincinnati, a sister-in-law Maxine Cloutier of Michigan and sisters Kathleen Hoban and Rosemary Morgan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Elise and her son William Todd, and three brothers, Edward, Kevin and Denis Kelly.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 7820 Beechmont Ave., Anderson Twp., on Monday, December 17th at 10 am. Friends may visit at the church on Monday from 9 to 10 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to http://www.tinroof.org/
